Natural Enhancers–How Does Horny Goat Weed Compare?

There are many natural remedies that have been used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED)–be it acupuncture or arginine, or ginseng or pomegranate juice. But how well do these treatments work, and how do they compare in terms of effectiveness?

In the United States alone , an estimated 30 million men suffer from impotence, and 70% are caused by a life threatening conditions like atherosclerosis, kidney disease, vascular disease, neurological disease, or diabetes. ED can also be caused by side effects of certain medications, surgical complications, and psychological issues.

It is important to speak to a doctor first if you are suffering from ED. Self medicating, even if it’s a natural remedy can be dangerous and ineffective if you haven’t pinpointed the cause of your impotence. However, occasional ED responds well to some natural remedies.

Acupuncture: While this method has been prescribed to treat erectile issues for centuries, there haven’t been any studies that confirms or dis-confirms its effectiveness. Some studies have found acupuncture to be effective at some forms pain relief, though nothing has been established as of yet for ED.

Arginine: L-arginine is an amino acid which occurs naturally in food, that is said to boost the body’s production of nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes the smooth muscles that surround the blood vessels, which should facilitate erections because of increased blood flow. Studies have shown mixed results for arginine’s effectiveness, and it can interfere with your medication so consult with a doctor before taking these supplements.

DHEA: Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for a healthy libido. Over-the-counter supplements containing DHEA, a hormone that is converted into testosterone and estrogen by the body, can treat some cases of ED that have been caused by ow testosterone levels.  However, DHEA can cause side effects, like suppression of pituitary functions. The long term side effects have yet to be documented.

Ginseng: Some cases of ED have been remedied by Red Korean Ginseng, though there aren’t any studies that have confirmed this. How ginseng can relieve ED is currently unknown, though some experts have speculated that it raises nitric oxide levels in the blood stream.

Pomegranate juice: Rich in anti-oxidants, this “super food” has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including a lowered risk for heart disease and high blood pressure–2 of the major conditions known to contribute to ED. While no study can prove that pomegranate juice prevents ED, it promotes good health, which can help prevent suffering from ED.

Yohimbe: Before the popularity of designer pharmaceuticals, a man made version of the herb yohimbe (yohimbine hydrochloride) was prescribed to treat patients suffering from impotence. However, the treatment is not particularly effective, and it has side effects such as jitteriness and other health issues. In addition, studies show that yohimbe is correlated with high blood pressure, anxiety, headache, and other health problems.

Horny Goat Weed: This amazing herb has been a mainstay in Chinese medicine for effectively and safely treating ED, low libido, and premature ejaculation for centuries. Recent studies have shown that the active compound in horny goat weed, icariin, works in the body the same way as the active ingredient in Verona (sildenafil) does by inhibiting the enzyme that restricts blood flow in the vessels. The herb has been found to raise testosterone levels and has even been used to treat osteoporosis in women.

Ginkgo biloba: Sold over the counter to maintain cognitive health, it has been used to treat ED that has been caused by emotional and psychological reasons. However, results that show its effectiveness as an impotence remedy has been found wanting. There have been no studies that have proven its effectiveness, and it is not recommended for ED therapy.

In comparison, Horny Goat Weed is by far the most sensible and effective natural enhancement. With studies confirming the effectiveness of its active compound (icariin) and having little, if any side effects, it’s clear that horny goat weed is the natural enhancement and herbal remedy of choice today.
