How Does Horny Goat Weed Compare As A Natural Enhancer?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the variety of natural remedies that purports to effectively cure erectile dysfunction (ED),but proof on how well these treatments work are hard to come by. Hopefully, this post will shed some light on some popular natural remedies, so you can make the best informed decision about your sexual health.

Today, there is an estimated 30 million men in the United States that suffer from impotence, with about 70% of cases being caused by underlying health issues such as atherosclerosis, heart problems, and diabetes. Other factors such as stress, complications from surgical procedures, and psychological issues like depression may also contribute.

Before trying any natural remedy, it’s wise to always consult a medical professional first.  Proper treatment means that the actual cause of the ED must be diagnosed, so it can be targeted and remedied.

Acupuncture: Though western medicine has begrudgingly confirmed acupuncture’s efficacy as a pain relief treatment, no such results have been duplicated in scientific studies. However, relief fro pain may indirectly help relieve erectile dysfunction if discomfort and pain contributed to the condition in the first place.

Arginine: Found naturally in many foods and sold as a popular over the counter supplement, this amino acid boosts the body’s production of nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes the smooth muscles that surround the blood vessels. This should increase blood flow to all muscle tissue (including the penis), making for firmer erections. The effectiveness of arginine supplements have not been conclusively proven in studies, and may interfere with some prescription pharmaceuticals.

DHEA: This hormone is added to supplements that when taken, is converted into testosterone by the body. This has been used to treat some cases of ED that are the result of low testosterone levels.  Unfortunately, DHEA can cause unpleasant side effects, such as the suppression of pituitary function. Long term and permanent side effects are not known at this time.

Ginseng: Specifically Red Korean Ginseng has been speculated to work on ED by raising nitric oxide levels in the bloodstream, though no scientific study has established what the active compounds in the plant is yet.

Pomegranate juice: This anti-oxidant rich “super food” has been shown to have numerous health benefits, such as lowering your risk for heart disease and high blood pressure–2 of the common health problems known to cause impotence. While it hasn’t been proven that pomegranate juice can prevent ED, lowing your risks for underlying health issues that can cause ED certainly helps.

Yohimbe: Artificial versions of the herb yohimbe (yohimbine hydrochloride) was prescribed to treat sufferers of impotence before the invention of Viagra and Cialis. Unfortunately, the drug and its herbal counterpart is not particularly effective, and has caused side effects such as jitteriness and headaches and is found to be correlated with high blood pressure, anxiety, and other health issues.

Horny Goat Weed: This amazing plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to effectively and safely remedy ED, low libido, and premature ejaculation for hundreds of years. Highly reagarded studies have shown that the active compound in horny goat weed, icariin, works in the body the same way as the active ingredient in Viagra (sildenafil) does by inhibiting the enzyme that restricts blood flow in the vessels. It also raises the nitric oxide levels in the blood stream to promote blood flow to all muscle tissues. The herb has been found to raise testosterone levels and has even been used to treat osteoporosis in women. Usually, over the counter supplements range from 5% to 60% in concentration for icariin. Anything higher than 60% is relegated for laboratory use and research. The herb also has no documented side effects.

Ginkgo biloba: Sold as supplements to maintain and promote good memory, some have tried it to treat ED that has been caused by emotional and psychological reasons. However, there are no studies at this time to back up any claims of effectiveness.

Compared to the other natural enhancements in the market today, Horny Goat Weed stands out as the safest and most proven. Unlike the other natural remedies, scientific studies have confirmed the effectiveness of its active compound (icariin), and have been found to have no known side effects. While generally safe to take with alcohol or other medications, please consult your doctor first before taking horny goat weed.
