What’s So Great About Horny Goat Weed?

Horny Goat Weed, known scientifically as Epimedium, also known colloquially as Rowdy Lamb Herb, Barrenwort, Bishop’s Hat, Fairy Wings, and Yin Yang Huo. This ancient plant comes in 60 or more species, with most of the varieties being cultivated in southern China, and some subspecies being native to Europe, and throughout the rest of Asia such as Japan and Korea. Some Epimedium species are popular for gardens and landscaping, and are not used for treating conditions and ailments at all.

Horny Goat Weed As Medicine

The herb is an excellent aphrodisiac because it contains a chemical compound called icariin. According to legend, a Chinese goat herder observed his flock engaging in mating behavior much more than usual after eating the plant. Today, the secret is out about this plant’s amazing properties, and it’s booming popularity as a health supplement means it is now widely available in raw herb, pill, or tablet form.

Icariin is the main active ingredient in horny goat weed, with various brands varying from 5% up to 60% potency. Strengths above 60% are generally reserved for lab study and are not available for consumption by the general public.

Icariin works by increasing levels of nitric oxide in the blood stream, which relaxes the smooth muscles surrounding the blood vessels. This allows more blood to flow through the blood vessels, allowing more blood to fill various tissues, especially penile tissue. Since erections can only occur with sufficient blood flow, this active compound is very beneficial to men suffering from erectile dysfunction and impotence.

Recent studies also indicate that icariin can promote osteoblast activity in bone tissue, which is why traditional Chinese medicine has utilized this herb to treat osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms in generations of women. Women also benefit from the increase in nitric oxide levels, since increased blood flow to tissue (including bone tissue) is essential for cell maintenance and repair, which can prevent osteoporosis. Bone that maintains and heals itself on schedule is far less likely to experience a loss of bone density, a common problem in today’s older women.

In addition to treating erectile dysfunction and osteoporosis, icariin has also proven beneficial in remedying premature ejaculation and to be an effective libido enhancer.
